[14] I Would Be Surprised

About [14] I Would Be Surprised
“I Would Be Surprised” is another song from my “Summer of ’77 Keepables” collection. The new re-recorded version of this song was completed January 10, 2022, and is very much like the original recording (only, it’s better).
There’s a lot I’d like to say about this song. But for now, I’ll just say this:
I think it was Peter Yarrow – or maybe it was Paul Stookey – I can’t remember now which one it was –
In a letter to me in late 1976 or early 1977, he said, “You might be the next Bob Dylan!”
That struck me as a remarkable thing to suggest. I mean, all I was trying to do back then was to get my songs heard (which has been the story of my life). All I wanted to do was get my songs played on the radio.
But, as a songwriter, Bob Dylan is in a class by himself. Plus, the circumstances of the times were a huge contributing factor when Dylan made his emergence on the music scene.
And so I thought to myself, “I might be the next Bob Dylan?! I would be surprised!”
And from there, the lyrics to the song came pretty easily.
